Milwaukee man charged in stabbing death
MILWAUKEE - A man has been charged in the murder that occurred in the early morning on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Police were called to a scene just before 3 a.m. Aug. 18 and found Javier Bautista dead at the scene of multiple stab wounds. According to the criminal complaint, witnesses said they saw Bautista and Charles Smith get into a fight, which ended with Smith on top of Bautista, stabbing him multiple times.
After the stabbing, Smith reportedly said "he started it" then got into his car and left. The medical examiner found 14 stab wounds on Bautista's chest, stomach, jaw, back and head.
Smith, 30, was found at his home just hours later and taken into custody. The detective on scene reported the same vehicle seen at the crime, with bloody fingerprint smears on the door.
Smith has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide - use of a dangerous weapon. If convicted, he could face life in prison, plus five years for the use of a dangerous weapon.
