MILWAUKEE - Alderman Joe Dudzik helped catch two bank robbers. It was the smoke from the dye pack that caught his eye.
Dudzik was driving on West Oklahoma Avenue when he saw the two suspects run out the North Shore Bank.
The dye pack exploded, and was smoking - so Joe chased after the robbers. A nearby police officer also joined the chase, and in a few minutes, more police caught the suspects, and hauled them away.
So - why would a city alderman chase after bad guys?
"My father is a retired police officer,” says Alderman Joe Dudzik. “And we had many discussions about what public service really means."
Dudzik is no stranger to being a good samaritan. He was a DPW worker for 20 years and witnessed shootings and robberies. He even stopped a woman from being beaten on the head with a tire iron.
"We all got our equipment and some of us grabbed shovels and other implements and chased off her attacker," explains Dudzik.
So - catching bank robbers? All in a day's work. It’s something other DPW employees do too.
"They do get involved in a lot of stuff,” says Dudzik. “They see accidents occur. They also render assistance or they'll call for assistance."
Police arrested a 19 year old and a 27 year old.
