In the four years Kerry McGrath has been a teacher, she’s already spent hundreds of dollars on supplies.
But now, as a teacher at the Business and Economic Academy of Milwaukee, she has turned to the web to cut down on costs, using something called "Crowdfunding."
“As a teacher, I spend a lot of money out of my own pocket, but at the same time, I don't have unlimited resources,” explains McGrath. “This is a way to help balance out the money I can spend myself."
She used about half the money to buy books for her all her students. Check out the title: "Middle School the Worst Years of My Life."
“This book is something I know all of my students can relate to. It's something that can help them bring up their reading scores. And will really help them get a love for reading most students don't have right now," explains McGrath.
She plans on keeping the online page up for the whole school year. She's grateful to the all the people who've already chipped in.
There's enough money left over to buy a second batch of books. Kerry plans on placing the order sometime in the next few weeks.
Since she also teaches sixth grade science, she plans on using some of the money to buy supplies for her science lab.
