Local reaction to Syria

CREATED Sep. 3, 2013

MILWAUKEE - You might not realize, but there is a growing Syrian community here in Milwaukee. One Syrian woman says it's hard to watch what's happening, knowing her family is in danger.

"All the destruction and the bloodshed and the lives lost, the women and children, it's heartbreaking," said Dima Alghazzy.

Alghazzy is originally from Syria, but has lived in the U.S. for about a decade. She still has aunts, uncles and a grandmother who live in Damascus and Allepo.

"Every time we hear there's an attack we call them feverishly to make sure they are ok," Alghazzy said.

She adds with daily attacks, her family isn't safe, even inside their homes, "They are very afraid. They can't venture far out from home. They keep a stockpile of food because you never know when something is goign to hit and they will be stuck."

The last time she was in Syria was 2005--now, she's too afraid to return, but still wants to be involved.

"We want to help any way we can. We feel like our hands are tied. We want to get the word out and make people aware of what's going on."
