JANESVILLE - The Janesville School Board is paying thousands of dollars to a teacher who was drunk on a school field trip.
Maria Caya was caught drunk on the job back in June. As part of a resignation agreement, the district agreed to pay her more than $18,000 dollars in unused sick time. She also gets health benefits through the end of August. The school board president said the agreement will keep students from reliving the ordeal.
“To do a thorough investigation would have involved students put in an uncomfortable situation and quite frankly I do not, would not, want my son to go through that situation at all,” said Greg Ardrey, the school board president.
The school board unanimously accepted Caya's resignation and is now reviewing its policies.
According to police, Caya had a blood alcohol content level of .27, more than three times the legal limit for driving.
