GREEN BAY - DOT leaders say it could take months or even a year to reopen the bridge. Inspectors say this dip is something they've never seen before.
"We're doing an investigation to figure out the cause and determine what measure we have to take to repair it," says bridge engineer Dale Weber.
That investigation could also review similar bridges and two construction projects on the Leo Frigo bridge in the past year. DOT leaders say the bridge is not considered structurally deficient. They will also look at if any of the rest of the bridge has been affected as well.
At a news conference in Green Bay, the Department of Transportation says the settling of a pier, located on land, caused the dip on the road surface. Pier 22 is the structure in question. There is no timetable for when the bridge will reopen. "It could be months, maybe a year." Regional Communications Manager Kim Rudat explained.
Governor Scott Walker addressed the media Wednesday.
"Our number one objective is public safety." Walker said. "We are committed with working with our partners on the local and federal level to determine what happened at Pier 22."
Drivers are being rerouted at Atkinson and Webster. Detour signs are posted. The DOT says take I-43 northbound traffic should exit to HWY 172 west to HWY 41, then north to I-43 southbound.
Southbound traffic can follow HWY 41 south to HWY 172 to I-43.
Green Bay Police say drivers should avoid the area if possible. Green Bay Police say drivers should use caution through the detour route and use areas like the Mason Street bridge to cross the Fox River.
Officers also ask pedestrians to be careful and use marked crosswalks for their safety.
An investigation is also underway into the impact of shipping into the Port of Green Bay through the Fox River.
