House fire breaks out near UW - Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE - Crews battled a house fire Thursday night on Milwaukee's east side.

It happened just before 9:00 p.m. near N. Downer Ave. and E. Newport Ave. Many college students live in the area in rented homes.

The fire burned through three floors, with flames billowing from the attic.

Six people lived inside. A fire chief tells us they all got out safely.

Several engines and ladder trucks arrived because of the threat that the fire could spread to adjacent homes. Deputy Chief Aaron Lipski tells TODAY'S TMJ4 that many of these homes, while built to last many years, are all fire hazards because of their wood structure.
