MILWAUKEE - Drivers are bracing for more headaches as another major road construction project gets underway.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said preparations for the I-794 Lake Freeway / Hoan Bridge Project will beginMonday.
The project will include improvements to intersections, new ramps and crossovers to prepare for construction. Drivers will be detoured along the Jackson / Van Buren St. exit to Michigan St. and east to Lincoln Memorial Dr.
Also closing for the next two years will be the Lincoln Memorial Dr. southbound entrance ramp to I-794 East (Southbound). Drivers will be detoured to the Broadway St. entrance ramp.
During the span of the project, sections of I-794 will be rebuilt.
The decking on the Hoan Bridge will be replaced and steel girders will be cleaned and repaired. The bridge will also receive a fresh coat of paint.
"There’s a lot of traffic and I think it's going to be worse and it's going to be bottled up," said Joe Zimmerman.
The Bay View man uses the Hoan Bridge daily and is anticipating long delays.
The DOT plans on using new technology that will lay down movable barriers to control traffic. The barriers can be moved to open or close additional lanes.
