Guilty plea for accused drunk driver who nearly killed deputy

By Jonah Kaplan. CREATED Jun 12, 2014

MILWAUKEE -- Kevin Hutchins, Jr. sat in court strapped to his wheelchair, and perhaps that was an appropriate metaphor for a man handcuffed by the the evidence stacked against him.

Dash cam video captured the violent crash last October: Hutchins slams into a median while running from sheriff's deputies.

Later, another video shows him yelling and swearing at the paramedics trying to help him.

On Thursday, Hutchins spoke in a much softer, conciliatory tone.

"I had a lot of things in my life unfold at one time and unfortunately I made the wrong choice of drinking and the worse choice of getting behind the wheel," Hutchins told Judge Glenn Yamahiro. "I never intended to harm anybody. I tried to hurt myself that night."

Hutchins pled guilty to recklessly endangering safety, fleeing an officer, and drunk driving (it's his third OWI offense). In return, prosecutors dismissed four other charges: battery of an emergency rescue worker; bail jumping; OWI; and resisting an officer.

Sentencing will take place at 8:30 a.m. on July 28.
