Early morning fire causes 'heavy damage' to Racine school

By Jonah Kaplan and Lacey Crisp. CREATED Feb 27, 2014 - UPDATED: Feb 27, 2014

UPDATE: The morning blaze caused heavy damage to the school's gymnasium area, according to Racine Fire Chief Steve Hansen.

"It is totally destroyed and has collapsed down onto itself," he said.

The blaze was contained to the gym and crews were able to stop it from extending into the rest of the school. Crews had the flames under control around 4:30 a.m Thursday morning.

Hansen said there is smoke and water damage to the basement, first and second floors of the school.

"If you think about gymnasiums...you have wooden floors, decorations that are on the walls that are all flammable, you have electrical in the area...my understanding is there was also a warming kitchen in the area," Hansen said. "We have multiple areas we need to look at and obviously we have no idea where the fire started until we actually get in there."

Crews will remain on the scene to make sure everything is structurally stable.
