MILWAUKEE - William Melendez Junior is one of 48 shooting victims this month alone in Milwaukee.
His murder happened in broad daylight on 43rd and Oklahoma.
On Friday Family Dollar will announce a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the person who took the life of a husband, father and friend for $100.
“I said I can’t believe it,” said Cristina Melendez. Tears flow as she remembers the man she loved for 15 years.
“One day he said to me, you never forget Cristina, I always love you.”
Bill Melendez meant the world to her. But when police told her what happened, she couldn’t believe his life meant so little to an armed robber.
“He took $100 dollars. After he took the $100 he shot him in the head. I said just for $100, why?”
The 44-year-old father had just started his second shift when a man walked into the Family Dollar store and shot Melendez in the head.
“I can’t believe he's gone,” said Mark Gates. Bill was his best friend. He remembers the last conversation they had as Bill left for work. It’s a conversation they had several time before.
“I said you've got to be careful, because they had been robbed four different times but not with a gun," remembers Gates.
As the family struggles with why, Cristina tries to answer perhaps the toughest question from their 13-year-old, Sebastian.
“Mom, so I don’t have no more Dad? I said: ’No son. I’m your Dad and I’m your Mom,'" Cristina remembers.
Last week Sebastian was looking forward to going to the State Fair with his father. This Saturday he will be going to his father’s funeral.
