Dive crews recover body of elderly man in Kenosha County
TOWN OF SALEM - Neighbors and friends of Clyde Routheaux, 75, are stunned. Many of them spent Tuesday evening standing by the shoreline of Center Lake while dive crews searched for their friend.
Deputies tell TODAY’S TMJ4 Routheaux took his boat out on the lake to cool off. They recovered Routheaux's body around midnight Tuesday.
“He was out swimming with his daughter and with a friend, and they had been swimming. He decided to enter the water and go for a swim. After several minutes of swimming, he went underwater,” explained Sgt. Bill Beth of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department.
First responders flocked to the lake. Routheaux’s family lent the man’s pontoon boat as a staging area for divers.
After two hours, the search became a recovery mission.
“...We just realized that we’re not going to be able to find the victim. [It’s] certainly difficult for his family, who was right there with him, and tried to help him and find him initially,” Beth said.
A full-scale search wrapped up Tuesday night, though sonar crews continued to comb the waters for any sign of the man.
"I can most certainly appreciate why someone went out and cooled off," Town Board Supervisor Dennis Faber said. "It's just one of those terrible, terrible things."
