The Green Bay Packers are on the road this week for their season opener against the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Mike McCarthy joined Wisconsin's Morning News to talk about the game, and the season ahead.
"We're excited to get going, to play a real game," he said. "We took a little different approach as far as the preseason. Obviously our starters didn't play as a much as they probably would in the past. But it's time to play real football, and we feel like we're ready."
The regular season opener is an away game, something that hasn't happened much in McCarthy's time with the Packers.
"We've been very fortunate, in my time here...I think this is only the second or third time we've had to go on the road for opening day," the coach explained. "It's the National Football League, this will be a great venue to go out to. We're going out there to play a football game, this will be a great environment to play in."
The game will feature a player that has been out of the league for a few years, Johnny Jolly. Jolly went through a personal struggle years ago, but is now back and as strong as ever. McCarthy has nothing but confidence in his ability.
"There's not doubt about it, because Jonny Jolly is someone that, since he has come back, he has that magnetic personality," he said. "He has a lot of natural leadership ability. It's important for Jolly to take it one step at a time. He has done a great job. I just can't say enough about Johnny and his support from his teammates."
The team has dubbed themselvesTeam 93, in honor of the teams that have come before them. The season will represent the best of the Packers and the honor the organization has, and will continue to have in the future.
"This is the 93rd team in the history of the Green Bay Packers," McCarthy said. "We always acknowledge our history and tradition and clearly have an understanding not only of the importance and focus in winning the next work championship but doing it the right way. Do it within the guidelines of the values of our great organization."
The Packers' season opened against the San Francisco 49ers will kick off at 3:25 p.m. on Sunday. Pregame coverage begins on 620WTMJ and online here at 1 p.m.
