Cities get creative to stretch salt supplies

WAUKESHA - Snow, wind and plummeting temperatures are a dangerous equation for drivers this weekend. When asking drivers what they thinking of winter weather driving conditions, they didn’t hold back their feelings.
"Four letters probably should not be spoken on tv," said driver Deja Heztel.
Maneuvering on icy roads and through the snow can be one thing but adding wind can create white out conditions this weekend.
“It's definitely tough, you have got to have salt with all the cold temperatures and light dustings we have been getting - plowing doesn’t do too much,” said driver Eric Kurber.
It's mid-January and Waukesha Street Supervisor Steve Dziekan says the city has already used about 9,000 tons of salt this season.
“We have not run out of salt - We are being proactive about it and we started premixing this week," said Dziekan, “we started mix salt and sand 50/50.”
The city is not a alone in the county - the Town of Waukesha is also going to a 50/50 mix to make it through this brutal winter.
