Children participate in Walk to School Day on Wednesday
MILWAUKEE - Safe Kids Southeast Wisconsin, Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, the Milwaukee Police Department and volunteers from FedEx will be participating in Walk to School Day on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
More than 250,000 children across the United States will participate in the annual event to learn safe walking skills and to encourage the creation of safe walking environments.
"On International Walk to School Day, parents and caregivers teach and model safe pedestrian behavior," said Lisa Klindt Simpson, coordinator, Safe Kids Southeast Wisconsin. "Our children learn by mimicking what they see. By walking with them, we can show children how to walk safely."
According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries are the second-leading cause of death among children ages 5 to 14 worldwide. More than 60 children are injured every day and nearly 500 children are killed every year.
The event will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Next Door Foundation 2545 N. 29th St. in Milwaukee.
