Chess prodigy from Madison brings home gold
MADISON -- A ten year-old from Madison became the only American to take home a gold medal from the World Youth Chess Championship in the United Arab Emirates
The Wisconsin State Journal says Awonder Liang is now the first person to win championships in the U10 (10 years old and younger) and U8 (8 years old and younger), a feat he accomplished two years ago in Brazil.
Liang became the youngest American chess master ever earlier this year, when he reached the distinction at the age of 9 years, 11 months, and 14 days.
The fifth-grader will be eligible to comptete in the 12-and-under division next year in South Africa.
