RACINE – City leaders in Racine would like to sell a small plot of land in Mound Cemetery to a family. However, Native Americans believe the area to be part of an ancient burial ground. Crews had planned to drill into the ground to look for remains Friday, but workers left after two dozen protestors showed up.
The mayor of Racine said the argument isn’t about history, but rather backlash after he broke a tie vote to sell the land. It is not clear yet when archaeologists plan on returning to the site to collect samples.
