Cardinal Dolan tells Milwaukee Catholics 'sinful side' of church is reason many are leaving
MILWAUKEE (AP) -- New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan says one reason some Catholics have left the church is that they've been "shocked, saddened and nauseated by the sinful behavior" of some of its members, including clergy.
Dolan spoke Thursday to a sold-out crowd of 4,000 in Milwaukee, where he served as archbishop from 2002 to 2009.
It is his first appearance in Milwaukee since the archdiocese released the personnel files of 42 priests with substantiated allegations of child sexual abuse against them in July. Dolan did not mention that explicitly.
But he says the biggest pastoral problem facing the church is the growing number of people who identify as former Catholics, and he says one reason for that is that they are dismayed by what Dolan calls "the sinful side of the church."
