WEST BEND -- The man charged with killing a Hartford teen pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Prosecutors charged Daniel Bartelt with 1st degree intentional homicide in the death and 1st degree recklessly endangering safety of 19-year-old actress Jessie Blodgett last summer.
Several members of Bartelt and Blodgett's families attended Wednesday's arraignment. Considering the stakes - and crowd - few people expressed any emotion.
Prosecutors blame Bartelt for the gruesome murder of his former classmate and friend Jessie Blodgett.
Bartelt first told investigators he had nothing to do with it; police didn't arrest him until several days after the crime. Investigators reported finding ropes, tape, a gag ball and beach towel with rd stains. Police indicated they have DNA evidence linking Bartelt.
By pleading not guilty by reason of mental illness, Bartelt will undergo a thorough psychiatric evaluation by a court-appointed physician.
The parties will reconvene to review the medical report and diagnosis in January.
