Police believe alcohol a factor in Milwaukee River death

By James Kust. CREATED Aug 20, 2013 - UPDATED: Aug 20, 2013

MILWAUKEE - Police now believe alcohol was involved when two people went into the Milwaukee River Monday night.

A woman survived -- pulled out by people walking the pier that night.  A man didn't make it -- his body discovered Tuesday afternoon. There’s no indication why they were in the water.

"That's what we're trying to ascertain," explained MFD's Frank Alioto. "She's a little confused right now."

It's the latest in a series of alcohol-related river deaths. Two of the most high profile -- Thomas Hecht, who drowned after a St. Patrick's Day pub crawl in 2012 and Nick Wilcox who drowned after a night of drinking New Year's Eve.

"It always brings back memories, even if it's an old guy somewhere else," says Andrea Wilcox. "Anything that has to do with water brings back the memory."

Andrea Wilcox is Nick's sister and has been outspoken about a need to change the way people go out downtown. Every new case is another reason to fight for safer ways.

"I don't completely blame the establishments," she says. "But also, you should kind of cut back on the people that you know are, or look intoxicated."

And for Andrea, that responsibility starts with you and your friends.

"You always have to watch you and your own back and everybody else that you went with," Wilcox explains.

Now, another family is getting the same phone call Andrea did. The one nobody wants. And the one Andrea never wants anyone else to go through.

"Just be safe and be careful. There's really nothing else you can do."

Police have not released the names of the couple involved in Monday night's incident.
