Air traffic control calls released in Lake Michigan plane crash

By Jaclyn Brandt. CREATED Sep 30, 2013

MILWAUKEE - It has been two months since a small plane crashed into Lake Michigan, and we now know what the pilot told an air traffic controller moments before he lost contact.

"I could go down lower if you like,” the pilot radioed to air traffic control.

Air traffic control responded, "Number 1549 xray negative. I need you to just turn out of there and then I will get you northbound as soon as I can.”

“I got it in sight," the pilot, William Gensler responded.

Those were the last words air traffic controllers heard from Gensler.

He and a passenger had just taken off from Racine and were headed to Oshkosh. Both men died in the crash.

The NTSB is still investigating the cause.
