Activists confront diocese over pig wrestling

By The Associated Press. CREATED Aug 14, 2014

STEPHENSVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Activists weren't happy about a pig-wrestling fundraiser that a Green Bay-area church held, so they're offering the bishop cash if he takes the pig's place in the muddy pit.

A Press-Gazette Media report says Steve Hindi made the offer Thursday. He's the founder of an animal-protection group called SHARK.

He presented the Green Bay diocese with a video of Sunday's event. It showed one animal limping and others being dropped from a few feet.

Hindi says pig wrestling amounts to animal cruelty. He brought thousands of dollars in cash and said Bishop David Ricken can have it if he and other event organizers take the pigs' place.

Diocese spokeswoman Justine Lodl says the church made sure the pigs were safe.

Outagamie County deputies have said the event doesn't constitute animal abuse.
