Abuse records show WI archdiocese went to police

CREATED Sep. 3, 2013

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Victims of clergy sex abuse have long accused the Archdiocese of Milwaukee of covering up priests' crimes, but recently released records show police reports were made in many cases.

The archdiocese has released files on 42 priests, and two-thirds of those mention reports to police or a prosecutor.

Still, few charges were filed, and even fewer priests served jail time. Several were sentenced to probation.

Archdiocese spokesman Jerry Topczewski says officials sometimes expected victims who came forward as adults to make police reports themselves.

Peter Isely is an activist for survivors of clergy sex abuse. He says he's concerned about nine cases in which there's no record of a report.

In at least three, it appears a timely report may have allowed for charges to be filed.
