MILWAUKEE -- Police hope you can help them find the driver of a van involved in the deadly hit and run.
The crash happened around 10 p.m. Saturday near 12th and National. A 39-year-old man died, and another is in critical condition.
Police described the hit and run vehicle as a white, GMC conversion van with a ladder rack on the top. Surveillance video from nearby Texas Food and Liquor captured a grainy image of a van that matches that description. The surveillance did not capture the actual accident half a block away.
Police said the van probably has some front-end damage.
One woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, saw two cars pull over to help the people who were hit by the van.
"I was in my house and I heard the crash. I looked outside and there was someone balled up. I couldn't really tell if it was a person or not. The other person was on the other side of the driveway stretched out," recalled the woman.
The video also shows an MPD squad car racing to the scene minutes after the hit and run.
"I’ve been living here almost two months,” said Sherika Avery. “And I've never seen anything like that. I barely see the police over here."
People who live in this neighborhood are stunned that someone would just drive off after hitting two people.
“It's messed up because that's a life that's been taken," noted Avery.
“People try and cross this street all the time, but there's not exactly people getting hit. There are car crashes here and there,” added another witness.
Police continue to search for that driver and the white van.
The second person who was hit is in critical condition at a local hospital.
