Greenfield boy inspires more donations to police department

By Jesse Ritka. CREATED Sep 17, 2013

GREENFIELD – It’s the video now sweeping the nation: 11-year-old Max Siepert had been saving up his change since April and gave it all to the Greenfield Police Department last Friday. Max’s generosity has gone viral; the TODAY show showed his random act of kindness all morning long on Tuesday.

The Greenfield Middle School student tells TODAY’S TMJ4’s Jesse Ritka what it was like to be featured on NBC this morning, “That is really awesome!  That is national television!  The weirdest thing is that it was only $10.03 and that was it.”

But Max’s little gesture created a big response, Ginger Wollert was moved by Siepert’s story, "It just really touched my heart to see this little boy donate his savings and 10 dollars is a lot to a little 11-year-old boy so I just thought I would donate it, match his donation and drop the money off tonight after work and pay it forward."

By 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, the Greenfield Police Department had already received cards and eight other Max-sized donations like Ginger’s. “That makes me feel really good, really good because now people that I don't even know are trying to like follow my footsteps and it's just awesome,” Max exclaims.

But Max wants his classmates to get some credit too, on 9/11 they all wrote how they could make a difference in someone’s lives and were encouraged by their teacher, Nick Costantini, to act, “"I turned it into sort of a let's do good things for other people."

Max even asked his teacher how he should go about donating his money to the police department, “Well I kind of half jokingly said 'well you could just walk in and give it to them' and then I turned on the TV and that's what he did!  I'm extremely proud, I'm not only proud of him, but of the other 80 kids I have who have plans,” Costantini explains.

A class assignment turned into a life lesson that has Max encouraging everyone to do a random act of kindness, “Think about it... I did it... a lot of other people have done it and we made a huge difference.”
