Milwaukee archdiocese files show pressure on Dolan

CREATED Jul. 7, 2013

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Documents released by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee show there was pressure on New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan to get rid of abusive priests as quickly as possible when he was archbishop of Milwaukee.

Dolan took over in mid-2002, when the clergy abuse scandal was developing nationwide.

Priests accused of abuse had been removed from ministry, but the church was still responsible for supporting them.

Memos included in the files released last week show two archdiocese employees urged Dolan in 2006 to have one priest kicked out of the priesthood. The employees believed supporting him would be a drain when the archdiocese was struggling to pay settlements with victims and fulfill other church obligations.

Pope Benedict XVI officially defrocked the priest in 2008 at Dolan's request. The man died last year.
