BROWN DEER - North Shore Fire Chief Robert Whitaker is always prepared for a call about one of his firefighters. It's impossible to imagine getting a call about 19. "To deal with and see the families and friends of 19 people and know that all those people were your co workers, it's just unbelievable."
Chief Whitaker will encourage his firefighters to talk about the story today. "The best way to deal with things is to talk about them, don't let them bottle them up. We have a great support group inside where people can talk to each other and trust each other," Whitaker said.
Whitaker is already doing his little part to help. He's changed his Facebook profile picture to the logo of the unit affected by the tragedy in Arizona. It has a black line across it. "The black band across their patch is a symbol of mourning. I saw several of my peers post it this morning as a way to honor those people who lost their lives last night."
Certainly there will be ways for you to help by making a financial donation in the coming days. But if you want to help right now, Chief Whitaker says just pray for the families affected.
