State Assembly delays budget work after 15 minutes of debate

By the Associated Press. CREATED Jun 18, 2013

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The state Assembly has adjourned after debating the state budget for only 15 minutes.

The Assembly is scheduled to resume debate at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and vote at 5:30 p.m.

Action was delayed on Tuesday while lawmakers waited for a Republican-sponsored amendment that makes a series of changes to the two-year spending plan.

Republican Speaker Robin Vos says the changes are largely technical. Both sides were to be briefed on the topics of the amendment Tuesday night while the wording was finalized.

Both sides agreed to time limits to avoid late-night debate and votes that had become common in the Assembly in recent years, particularly on the budget.

The Senate is scheduled to begin budget debate Thursday.
