Buzzing cell phone causes bomb scare in Germantown
GERMANTOWN - A suspicious package led to a call to the bomb squad in Germantown Monday, but the contents ended up being harmless.
According to Chief Peter Hoell with Germantown Police, just before 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 17, a mail carrier eported a "ticking and shaking" package in her mail truck.
"The carrier took it out of her mail truck and set it on the grassy right of way on Timberline Ct. Police and Fire Departments were dispatched," Chief Hoell said. "The address on the box was covered and the carrier wasn’t sure where she picked it up."
Police set up a 300 yard controlled area around the package until they found the owner of the package, who said the package contained a phone that had not been shut off.
"A call came in on the phone so the phone ticked and shacked because it had a missed call," Hoell said. "We were able to ID the package before the bomb squad arrived on scene."
Chief Hoell said it is a good reminder to turn off all electronic devices before they are mailed.
