'OWI Hunter' tactics ruled legal

CREATED Jun. 17, 2013

APPLETON -- Drunk drivers in the Fox Valley will get no reprieve from the "OWI Hunter," after a judge ruled he is not acting as an illegal agent of law enforcement.

The man known simply as Brad was called into an Outagamie County courtroom by a defense attorney last month as part of an attempt to get an OWI charge dismissed.

The attorney contended Brad was acting as an agent of law enforcement, though the "OWI Hunter" contends he does nothing different than what ordinary citizens do every day.

"They don't pull people over at my will," Brad said in a Skype interview Monday evening.

"They will make sure the person I'm reporting is legitimately swerving and things like that before they pull somebody over. It's not my decision, it's theirs."

In the end, the judge ruled Brad did nothing worthy of the case being dismissed.

"It's no different than any normal citizen reporting a drunk driver. i just happen to put myself in that position more than others," Brad said.
