FOND DU LAC – A young girl with ties to Wisconsin is among the dead in Moore, Oklahoma.
Sydney Angle, 9, vanished when a massive tornado destroyed Plaza Towers Elementary School. Search crews found the girl’s body a day later.
Angle used to visit her grandparents in Fond du Lac, where her parents grew up.
Neighbor Yasmin Sharif remembers the girl as a playful child who used to play in front of her house.
“Whenever she came to visit, [the children] would ride their tricycles out there, and they would say, 'Hi’ and, ‘Bye,’” Sharif explained.
The loss is felt across town. No one here anticpated a connection to such tragedy.
Local radio stations rallied to support the family, scrambling to establish a memorial fund in Sydney’s honor. Thousands of people have already signed on to help.
“It just shows you that people are always willing to help out their neighbors, and we’ve been getting phone calls to have people give all the time,” said Keith Heisler, programming director of WFDL-FM.
There’s no way to undo the devastation and bring Sydney back. Still, this community wants to provide comfort in any way it can.
“I wish I could do something for them, but I can’t, I’m so far away. I wish I could,” Sharif exclaimed.
