Wis. marathon makes changes to better handle heat

CREATED May. 13, 2013

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Organizers of the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon say they've made changes to better handle medical issues after heat and humidity sent 18 runners to emergency rooms last year.

This year's marathon starts at 7 a.m. Sunday.

Race director Sean Ryan tells Press-Gazette Media (http://gbpg.net/17Xn1Xr ) that one key difference this year will be in how race organizers and medical workers share information.

He says a volunteer with a hand-held radio will be at each of the water and medical stations along the course to relay information. Ryan says that will allow medical workers to focus on safety.

Other changes include having more radio channels available for communication, moving the medical tent to an area less accessible to spectators and streamlining the process for canceling the event if needed.
