Man arrested after setting fire that left 18-year-old dead
BEAVER DAM - A man from Cambria is behind bars after allegedly setting a fire which caused a man from Dodge County to die.
According to the criminal complaint, Jose Hernandez drove to the Maple Grover Trailer Court in Beaver Dam to pick up a relative who had been at the trailer of an 18-year-old man in the neighborhood. He later found his truck locked and said that the man had taken his keys.
According to neighbors, Hernandez started "yelling, screaming, pounding and kicking on the trailer", hoping someone would come out so he could get his keys. Hernandez later admitted to police that he broke the lower panel of the garage door so he could get into the trailer.
Hernandez told police once he was in the trailer he began an "all out fight" with the man. A witness Hernandez he was physically assaulting the man, who later died.
Hernandez admitted that as he left, he lit some matches and threw them on the floor, which caused a fire in the trailer. According to the Medical Examiner, the man had severe wounds, but his cause of death was Carbon Monoxide Poisoning.
Hernandez was charged with criminal trespass, battery, negligent handling of burning material and five other charges. The Dodge County Sheriff's Office said there may be more charges pending.
