WAUKESHA - There is controversy over who will drive the school bus in Waukesha, and some parents are concerned about a big change.
After decades of using the same bus company, the Waukesha School District decided to go with a new company, and it has some parents on edge about a new face carrying their precious cargo.
“The transition period is going to be the biggest thing, getting used to a different company, a different bus driver,” said parent Artist Terry.
Terry has three kids, and two of them attend Waukesha schools. He was surprised the district decided not to renew its contract with Dairlyand Bus, Inc.
“I think it's worth it in the long run,” he said. “Short term it may be an issue.”
School board president Daniel Warren said the company First Student was just a bit cheaper, but is offering new technology that will help keep kids safe.
“A student would have a card and they would swipe it when they would get on the bus,” Warren explained.
That means parents can log onto a website and know when their kids get on and off the bus. The technology is so new, it hasn't been installed in buses yet.
“It's a way of tracking the movement of students, the frequency of use of the bus,” he added.
Parents admit it will take a while to adjust to a new company, but many of them like the safety aspect.
“I think that's cool that parents can know that their children made it on the bus safely,” parent Stephanie Grossman said.
But this change means hundreds could be out of a job.
