Expert: Sex trafficking is 'everywhere'
APPLETON - Human trafficking is a growing problem across the country, in Wisconsin, and especially in Milwaukee.
"During our last nationwide operation, Milwaukee rescued the highest number of juveniles in the United States," Special Agent Chad Elgersma told us.
"Three years ago, sex trafficking wasn't the 'topic of the day,'" said Connie Campbell of 5-stones, a sex trafficking awareness group based out of Appleton. "Now it's everywhere."
"The Midwest is one of the hottest areas because of all the travel that takes place through Wisconsin," explained Campbell. "Truck drivers are (common customers) and pimps like Midwest girls because they're easier to control. They're more naive."
Every prostitute is a victim, according to Campbell.
"No little girl grows up saying 'I want to be a prostitute,'" said Campbell. "They have all been victimized."
