Volunteers tell others to say yes to same-day voter registration

CREATED Mar. 23, 2013

MILWAUKEE -  Calling it a war on voting, Mayor Tom Barrett joined a push Saturday to encourage voters to say yes to an upcoming referendum about same-day voter registration.

The question to appear on the April 2nd ballot is, "Should the state of Wisconsin continue to permit citizens to register to vote at the polls on election day?" It will be printed in both English and Spanish in areas with large Hispanic populations.

Although Governor Walker said last year that he's in favor of ending same-day voter registration, no bill has emerged that would do away with same-day registration.

One pending bill, however, would limit the hours for in-person absentee voting.

About two dozen volunteers told Mayor Barrett Saturday that they would knock on doors this weekend and talk to neighbors about the referendum, and encourage them to vote on April 2nd.

According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, same-day registration proved to be popular in Milwaukee this past November when one in five voters, or an estimated 54,000 residents, registered to vote on election day.
