MPS students battled cold overnight to understand Milwaukee's homeless

CREATED Mar. 22, 2013

MILWAUKEE - Some local high schoolers braved the cold overnight to learn a lesson and help some people in need.

Thursday night and Friday morning brought the 13th annual "box city" for students at Milwaukee's Riverside University High School.

In years past, when the kids have slept out overnight to learn about being homeless, the temps weren't so brutal.  Senior Jerel Ballard helped plan the event.

"We had around 45 (people)," said Ballard.

That's down from 100 in a typical year.

Still, for those who braved the cold, Jerel says they did mock scenarios to learn more about who a typical homeless person may be.

"Hearing everyone's story, where they came from, opened up (people thinking), 'This could be me.  This could be my friend,' " explained Jerel.

The event is also a fundraiser for the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity.
