WAUKESHA - A man from Waukesha County needs a kidney. It's not that unusual, but the way he's asking for help is very out of the ordinary.
It's not the average ad you seeing driving down the road. But Jeff Nelson is desperate for someone to save his life.
"We're just looking to get some more attention and more awareness," he said.
Nelson was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease 12 years ago. It's taken a toll, and now he needs a transplant.
"The transplant really became clear in January," Nelson said. "I talked with my nephrologist at Froedtert and he said that I'll need a trasnsplant this year or dialysis."
And time is of the essence for this husband and father of two.
"Monday, I'm going to have surgery for an access port on my left arm so I can go to dialysis 3 days a week," he explained.
Nelson has been on transplant lists at Froedtert, UW-Madison, and Mayo Clinic for the last three years. Wednesday morning, he got the news a friend of his was disqualified. It's not the first time he's heard that.
"My brother-in-law also tried to donate his kidney as well, but he was disqualified," Nelson said. "It's been difficult news to get.”
He has a Facebook page called "Jeff's Kidney". It already has nearly 200 "likes," but no donors. So, Nelson is going after drivers, a lot of them.
"With Miller Park on opening day April 1, people will be coming here on Canal St. and they'll be coming up and exiting at the park," he said.
And with any luck, they will looking up and helping out a man in need.
The billboard will be up for 30 days. Go to Jeffskidney.com for more information on how you can help.
