Marquette to play in new Big East in 2013-14

CREATED Mar. 12, 2013

MILWAUKEE - Marquette University's basketball program will play in a new "Big East" conference starting next year.

They will join DePaul, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova" in a conference which will keep the current conference name.

Their first season will happen in 2013-14, Marquette said in a joint statement with the other universities.

The split from the original Big East happened due to the departure of many football-playing schools, like Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and West Virginia, to conferences such as the ACC and Big 12.

There was no initial word about which teams would join the new conference, though speculation has included Butler, Creighton, St. Louis, Xavier and other schools.
