Officer Sebena's family, community mourn her death
WAUWATOSA - As most families gather for the holidays - friends and family of officer Sebena are leaning on each other.
The young officer was married.
This story has devasted the community in the Village of Wauwatosa. Trinity Episcopal Church was part of the many blocks locked down by police tape for much of the day. It's members gathered Christmas Eve to remember the officer lost.
Jennifer Sebena, 30, hadn't been with the Wauwatosa Police Department long. But she made an impression. "Great person, great officer," said Lt. Gerald Witkowski.
Behind the badege, Jennifer was a wife. She was married to a former marine for the past three years.
Jennifer's husband, Ben, detailed their romance in a video from a few years back, posted on YouTube.
"She was cute so I sent her a little message like 'hey, I'm a Marine. I'm in Iraq. How you doing?"
The two attended high school together and reconnected online while Ben was deployed. They exchanged emails daily. When Ben returned home, "our love flourished. We became actually infatuated with eachother. And then one day I asked if she'd be happy to spend the rest of her life with me and she said yes."
Jennifer took another big life step, joining the police force at the as a recruit. During that time she attended MATC's police academy. This summer, she started patrols on her own. Just last month, she was finally cleared after completing the departments mandatory probation period.
"This is just an unbelievable act that has touched everybody," said Lt. Witkowski.
