Who knew? There's a 'cheesy' method to help melt snow

CREATED Dec. 20, 2012

BALSAM LAKE, Wis. - Polk County in northwestern Wisconsin is using a cheesy method to keep roads clear during the snow storm.

A brainstorm to save money prompted officials to try a salty cheese brine as a road salt additive.

"It activates the salt faster, so we get a burn faster, utilizing less salt," said Mo Norby with the Polk County Highway division.

He told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jodi Becker that using the cheesy brine leads to a win-win.

"The dairy is saving on trucking costs, and we're saving on material costs for taxpayers."

Other counties are calling and asking if Norby can send them brine to try, too.

He says he's even gotten some cheese curds as a thank you.
