MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican state Rep. Robin Vos of Burlington has been elected speaker of the state Legislature.
He ran unopposed Tuesday and was elected to the post by his Republican colleagues.
The 44-year-old Vos was first elected to the Assembly in 2004. He served the past two years as co-chairman of the powerful budget-writing Joint Finance Committee.
Vos takes over as speaker for Jeff Fitzgerald, who ran for the U.S. Senate rather than to seek re-election.
As speaker, Vos will help determine which bills the Assembly takes up and guide its public message. Republicans are expected to hold a 60-39 advantage in the Assembly once election results from last week are finalized.
Assembly Democrats and Senate Democrats were also meeting Tuesday to elect their leaders for the session that begins in January.
