Father of victim in Brookfield spa shooting considering lawsuit

BROOKFIELD- The father of one of the victims of the Brookfield spa shooting is considering a lawsuit.

Maelyn Lind's father says more should have been done to protect his daughter and everyone else at the Azana Spa and Salon from a deranged killer.  And now, he has a lawyer working for him.

Flowers from Maelyn Lind's funeral now decorate the hair salon her father built for her at the back of his warehouse.

"Maelyn's spirit is with me and our whole family," says her father, Keith Hanson.

The mother of four and grandmother of two was shot and killed inside Azana Spa and Salon earlier this month.

Lind's father says he now has an attorney, and is considering his legal options.

TODAY'S TMJ4 Shelley Walcott: "If your lawyer says let's go ahead and file suit..."
Keith Hanson: "I would in a heartbeat.  And the same way with the Brown Deer Police Department.  They totally dropped the ball on the whole thing."

Witnesses say Lind took a bullet for Zina Haughton's daughter after Haughton's husband, Radcliffe, opened fire inside the salon.

Hanson had heard about tensions between stylist Zina Haughton and her husband, but Brown Deer police say Zina never wanted to press charges.

"This has been going on for a long time.  The threats, the tire slashing, everything like that," says Haughton.

And he says the salon owner, Tami Gemmell, should have done more to protect the people who worked there.

"Oh yeah, we beefed up security there," said Gemmell in a press conference following the shooting.

"Excuse me.  Beefed up security?" asks Hanson.

It's all left this father wishing he could have done more to protect his daughter.

"If I would have known anything that was going on and she was going down there that day I probably would have walked in there with her," says Hanson.

Hanson says he has been contacted by an insurance company representing the Azana Salon and Spa.

He has referred them to his lawyer.  Again, no final decision has been made on whether he plans to sue anyone.
