By the Associated Press. CREATED Oct 30, 2012

TWO CREEKS, Wis. (AP) -- The owners of the Point Beach nuclear power plant continue to make improvements at the Two Creeks facility and have increased the output of its two reactors by 17 percent.

One-third of the fuel assemblies in each of the two reactors are replaced every 18 months.

The refueling usually takes 30 to 40 days and includes a number of maintenance projects.

An upcoming shutdown is expected to temporarily employ about 650 people.

Point Beach has 700 full-time permanent employees.

Owner NextEra Energy Resources says it's spent about $750 million on increasing capacity and related upgrades.

The Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter (http://tinyurl.com/8bc67r6 ) says that while the Kewaunee nuclear plant will shut down next year, the Point Beach plant has contracts to sell electricity until its licenses expire in 2030 and 2033.
