Father of victim in Brookfield shooting says gunman hated his daughter
MERTON- The father of 38-year-old Maelyn Lind, one of the three women killed in the shooting at the Azana Spa and Salon in Brookfield, says the gunman, Radcliffe Haughton, despised his daughter.
"He (Radcliffe Haughton) knew my daughter, he hated her with a passion," says Keith Hanson, the father of Maelyn Lind.
Hanson tells Newsradio 620 WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Afternoon News with John Mercure" that Radcliffe Haughton hated her because Maelyn was a good friend of Zina Haughton, Radcliffe Haughton's wife.
Hanson says at the end of last week, Maelyn came out of work at the Azana Spa and Salon and had a flat tire on her brand new vehicle. Hanson wasn't sure if that was connected to Maelyn's friendship with Zina Haughton. Zina Haughton, in her request for a restraining order, said that Radcliffe Haughton had recently slashed her tires at work.
Hanson says he was told that Maelyn tried taking the gun away from Radcliffe Haughton during the shooting.
"She actually ended up getting shot and saving one of the other girls," describes Hanson.
Radcliffe Haughton killed two other women, Zina Haughton and Cary Robuck, before taking his own life Sunday morning. Another four women were hospitalized from the shooting.
Hanson says his daughter was recently a grandmother, something she was happy about.
"She was so happy in her life," explains a choked-up Hanson. "There was a light around here...She was always our angel, she kept us all together."
The Journal Sentinel reports that Maelyn Lind leaves behind four kids: Kaela, 19; Kody, 17; Kolten, 13; and Kammeron, 11; two grandchildren: 2-month-old Xander and 5-week-old Lily.
