Abele announces changes at Milwaukee County hospital following recent death
MILWAUKEE- A physician has resigned; a medical director and nurse practitioner have retired; and a director of nursing has been demoted following a recent death at the Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex.
Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele announced Friday night the changes made at the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division Hospital (BHD) following the death of 25-year-old Brandon Johnson.
"I take this situation and any death at BHD very, very seriously," Abele said. "We will continue to work to make the hospital the safest environment possible."
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke says Milwaukee police brought Johnson to the facility in handcuffs and leg irons on October 3. Just three days later, authorities say Johnson died of a broken neck that led to a fatal blood clot.
At the direction of County Executive Abele, BHD is "continuing to aggressively implement enhanced policies put into place last week," according to a news release. The release goes on to say that all medical and support staff have been briefed on the policies and given a copy of the policies. Also, that all staff were required to sign a document acknowledging that they understand and will implement the enhanced rules before returning to work.
The investigation into Johnson's death is ongoing.
