MILWAUKEE- A man from South Milwaukee is dead after he was hit by a car, walking along a busy road in Greenfield.
Don Prill was mowing his yard around three Monday afternoon when he saw a man just moments before he was hit by a car along Loomis Road.
"I saw him walk by as I was emptying the bags on my lawn mower. I turned around and I saw a guy flagging me down," says Prill.
The investigation shut down portions of the road for hours. The victim had been walking south, facing northbound traffic. Prill ran over and saw the man lying on the ground and a woman in tears, frantically checking his pulse. Prill grabbed his phone and called 9-1-1.
"The truck was bad. The headlights were smashed, hood's all bent up. It was pretty bad," says Prill.
Rescue crews tried everything they could.
"They show up, they turn him over and it just, it didn't look good from there," says Prill.
The 54-year-old man died at the scene. He was walking along the curb along Loomis Road near S. 45th Street right before the crash. Police say it's a tragic reminder not to take shortcuts when it comes to getting where you want to go, safely.
"You always have to be aware of your surroundings and if at all possible, go to a sidewalk," says Greenfield Police Captain Mike Brunner. "For example on the other side of West Loomis Road, there is a sidewalk there."
No charges or citations have been filed yet. The captain said they'll need to review the facts of the case to determine if that's appropriate.
