Court for suspect in death of woman found in Kenosha Co. cemetery

KENOSHA - A suspect in the death of a woman found in a Kenosha County cemetery was set to appear in a courtroom Thursday afternoon.

Javier Garcia faces a murder charge after allegedly killing his co-worker Lisa Mezera in August.

New test results led to a homicide charge, which defense attorneys say is unwarranted.

"There are no eyewitnesses, apparently, to the alleged incident," says Garcia's defense attorney Matt Perz.  "Mr. Garcia has made no confessions to any incident."

Prosecutors believe they have a strong case.  They maintain Garcia lied to investigators about being with Mezera the night she died.  Surveillance video puts his truck close to this cemetery, where detectives found the woman's body.  And investigators believe they found the woman's blood on Garcia's clothing.

Authorities maintain Garcia may have wanted to take his friendship with Mezera a step further.

"As a result of that relationship, I think he wanted to see more of that relationship than she did," says Kenosha County District Attorney Robert Zapf.

Lisa's dad, Ron, watched the proceedings, stung by pain on two fronts.

"Even though he's done something horrible, I pray for Javier's family as well. They've lost somebody special in their life, too," says Lisa's father Ron Mezera.

And with Garcia's bond set at $1 million, the Mezera family waits to fight another day.

Lisa's family says they'll be here every time Garcia heads to court.  He'll be back for a preliminary hearing next week.
