MILWAUKEE - Could Mitchell International close an entire concourse? The idea is at least being considered.
The airport is looking at the possibility of closing down Concourse E, which is its smallest.
A lot of change is about to happen at the airport as the result of airline mergers and changes. At least two merged airlines are in different places and plan to move to be together.
Last month, Delta Airlines announced it was moving to Concourse D. D is newer and has more amenities. It will also allow Delta to use the former Midwest Airlines Best Care Club for its Sky Club.
D is mostly vacant now after Frontier shut down its hub in Milwaukee. In addition, Southwest Airlines will soon move from the D concourse to be located next to AirTran (which Southwest is absorbing) in the C concourse.
Once Delta moves to D, only United Express flights to Newark and Houston will be left in E.
"Which would leave E empty, and allow us the opportunity to temporarily close down the concourse and save the operating costs," explained Mitchell spokeswoman Pat Rowe to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Michelle Richards.
The move would save the county money.
