MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department says that an elderly wrong-way driver led to a multi-vehicle crash which brought about the closure of I-94 westbound Wednesday morning.
A motorcycle rider was injured in the crash. It happened around 12:00 a.m. Wednesday morning near 20th Street.
According to a Sheriff's Department spokesperson, the driver, who is 80, was going east in the westbound lanes of I-94 around 25th Street.
Her car avoided a tow truck, but the truck's driver slammed on the brakes. The motorcycle rider struck the truck and was injured in his face and head.
According to witnesses, the elderly woman went from the 35th Street off-ramp to the freeway. She said she was "lost, confused and didn't know what to do." The spokesperson said the elderly woman was not drunk.
Sheriff's deputies cited her for wrong-way driving and inattentive driving. She will have to re-test for her driver's license.
Crews had to shutdown lanes for nearly 90 minutes while they cleaned up the crash scene.
